As the opportunity to move abroad presented itself, I couldn’t help but feel excited and anxious. I envisioned myself reading books at a cafĂ© while sipping on bubbly glasses of Prosecco. The people at my local haut would immediately recognize me and blanket me with love- after all, I would be spending money at their establishment buying glasses of Prosecco. It all seemed so glamorous… in my head. HA! Now enter two kids, very basic German (at first) and evil looks by the waitress because my daughter just knocked over, and broke, the Prosecco glass. Life in a new land can become very overwhelming. Whenever I would complain about not finding an English speaking Pediatrician, Gynecologist, or House Doctor, my Father-in-law would say (enter thick German accent and poor English, “Kim, you must learning by doing.”) Well, I took his advice, and subjected myself to many, many mistakes. I look back now, however, and realize with complete certainty that I’m not alone, there are several of us out there, and if I can share a sliver of knowledge with those new to the country, I will. These views I share are expressions of my successes and failures. I’m looking forward to hearing all of our readers' as well. I hope our blog inspires you to get out there, make mistakes…laugh…..and share your stories with us.
