German Carnival

More than just a festival, Carnival or Fasching, as the Germans refer to it, is a celebratory spectacle staged on the streets and cities throughout Europe during the month of February. Symbolizing the spirit of tradition with the decadence of party, this cultural jubilee manifests itself through vibrant parades and enchanting masquerade balls. Children are not left out in the festivities, in fact Carnival is much more celebrated than Halloween. With wildly fun costumes and imaginative themes, Fasching parties can be great fun. While my girls revel in the dressing up and dancing (most kindergartens allow at least one day when the kids can come in costumes), you can usually find me enjoying the more tempting merrymaking aspect of the event…the BERLINERS. Fortunately enough, I am in close proximity to several mouth watering German bakeries for my jam filled doughnut fix; but if you are far from Germany, wanting to throw a German inspired Fasching party and in need of a little caloric decadence of your own, try our recommended homemade version of the most delicious doughnut on earth. The Berliner. Enjoy!
