The Klamm

Today the Heikster and I are celebrating our 7th wedding anniversary...but if he makes me hike one more mountain it may be our last! After our whirlwind 4-day excursion to the LUXURIOUS (no exaggeration) 5 star Oberforsthof Hotel just outside Salzburg in the Austrian Alps, I'm whipped. Actually, I'm sitting here typing with hot patches all over my body. I mean we were staying in a 5 star resort, weren't there people at the hotel whose job it is to hike with over eager sport enthusiastic husbands?!? Some luxury resort that was!!! Regardless of the sore muscles and the aching heart; Heiko neglected to tell me you can actually drive to the Klamm not hike 5 mountains to get there (slight exaggeration but it felt like 5), it was the most euphoric experience ever- even more beautiful than our hiking adventure in Hawaii.

The Liechtenstein Klamm is a must do quest for every expat living in Europe. The natural beauty, thunderous roar of water, cascading waterfalls and serene illumination of the sun touching upon every imaginable wet vessel in the mountain allowed me to temporarily forget about the steep climb back to our hotel. Words alone cannot describe how exhilarating our little journey was and aside from a moment or two of shaky knee syndrome walking over planks that were straddling one of the 'longest and deepest gorges in the Alps' (okay, the planks were more like large wooden planks embedded into the side of the mountain...but still planks) it was by far the most thrilling activity I've done in awhile.

If you have the opportunity to take your family on a mountainous adventure to the Liechtensteinklamm or to a closer mountainous terrain like the Breitachklamm south of Ulm on the north side of the Alps in Allgau, I highly recommend it. Although I have not personally experienced the Breitachklamm in Oberstdorf, you can securely pack the baby in a backpack carrier and hold on tightly to the toddler through Liechtenstein.
The Klamm we chose to visit in Austria is quite a drive from Stuttgart and quite a drive from anywhere you live unless your house is located directly in the Austrian Alps, so I will, in my next post talk about lodging options a.k.a., Der Oberforsthof Hotel where we stayed during our wellness weekend getaway.

My husband's favorite klamm hike is the Höllental Klamm between the Zugspitze and Alpspitze near GAP. That one is pretty intense and I can't see small children working out well on that hike. But the Partnachklamm two mountains over in GAP is an easy family venture; it's practically paved lol.

Yes, my German husband is an avid hiker, too. I'm vying for a non-hiking vacation this year, or at least one that includes some sort of sandy beach!

Hi Laura,
Thank you for leaving a comment on my blog.
I love beautiful weather and I don't mind hot for a few days. But after a few days I start to feel "locked up".
For kids the weather is fantastic. Over here children will have their school holidays starting soon (I think next week). I hope for them they will get a really nice summer.
Take care,
Marianne.

I am so glad you posted this! I went there when I was 19 and could never remember the name. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did when I was younger. I would love to go back.

I love this gorge! Last summer my husband dragged me along on a 7 day, 95km hiking trip through the gorges of the Austrian Alps. It was beautiful, but tiresome! Happy Anniversary!
