If you have children and a sense of adventure you will absolutely love reading this post. I participated in one of the most exciting educational explorations with the kids this past weekend and I HIGHLY encourage you to do the same. Our Letterboxing voyage began online where we printed out a series of clues that would, eventually, lead us to a scenic and remote location in Northern Michigan. This modern form of treasure hunting led us through mountainous dunes and picturesque landscapes while solving clues, deciphering signs and cracking codes. After several laughs, a little sweat and a lot of fun we finally came across our 'hidden treasure'. The weatherproof Letterbox (which was hidden in a large tree stump) contained a logbook, carved rubber stamps and initials of seekers past.
As tradition goes, each seeker is to record their journey with a logbook of their own and select a rubber stamp characterizing the person who found the letterbox. Of course my little adventure seekers chose a stamp suitable to their personality and I (because they are still little) helped record their adventure in their own custom-made logbook. After locating the letterbox we stamped the box's logbook with our stamps, and stamped our own books with the box's stamp. WE HAD SOOOOO MUCH FUN!!!
Letterboxing has gained immense popularity throughout the states and continues to spread throughout the world. Take time to google letterboxing in your area, your next vacation destination (for a little family fun) or perhaps join the letterboxing team and create your own hunt for people in your area to discover. If you live in Germany or Continental Europe you can find letterbox information here.
Let the games begin!!!
