After hours of discovering my stomach was capable of enduring petit fours, pralines, truffles and exotic chocolates I decided to take the train home- I needed to release the cramps that were starting to form in my lower abdomen. Stores with the word 'Shockoladen' emblazoned on them were mine for the taking, and all of the artistic creations on display were entirely edible. In other words, I had my own Willy Wonka chocolate experience last Saturday and enjoyed each and every bite.Ulm is a wonderful city to visit if you are looking for great shopping and exceptional chocolates. With several specialty stores to choose from, there is something for every discerning palate. The large mass marketed stores (that are very good) like Hussel recently implemented a very respectable truffle/praline buffet bar in the middl
e section of their 'directly off the Ulm Muenster Marktplatz' ' shop and the smaller but even tastier chocolate artesian stores like 'Chocolat Genuss und meher' (my FAVORITE!!!) and Ulm's highly regarded store, Reichhart, which has served the city proud for over 100 years (pre and post war) are impeccable when it comes to creating unique chocolates that are distinctively packaged with unforgettable tastes like Strawberry Chili or Champagne Chill.Over the last three years I've had the pleasure of sampling several combinations of highly decadent German chocolates and limited edition specialty fares that give the Swiss a run for their money. When you plan on visiting Germany or live here as an expat (where Hershey's is the only familiar brand in your vocabulary) and plan on traveling to Ulm, I highly recommend you take ti
me to nourish your soul and engage in the art of enjoying exceptional chocolates at 'premier' stores where their heart is poured into each and every piece. Now I realize why the chocolate section in German grocery stores are larger than the chip and snack section....it reflects hundreds of years of wellmade chocolates for mothers WHO NEED a quiet moment for themselves. Pure bliss!!!
Sidebar: I was recently made aware that I cannot lawfully ship the chocolates (the stores would have) donated to the states. Sorry!!!
