I know that my four-year-old son has been living in Germany all of his short life so far because this past week he started begging me to buy him some tights after he saw that little brother started wearing them to fend off the cold.
Yes, kids wear strumphose here under their pants to keep them warm, and boys wear them also. I did not really realize or embrace this concept the entire first winter with P, and believe me, I got many comments about how my poor baby was freezing his little legs off. We do a lot of walking here in Germany as the schools, bakery, butcher, parks and Palace are all within 5-15 minutes walking. These tights are actually quite practical and help keep the chill out as Germany can get quite cold!
There are a plethora of adorable designs for girls and babies, but to find chic strumpfhose options for bigger boys can be challenging. Enter H&M, trendy clothes for the whole family and decent prices (perhaps a cross between Gap and Old Navy in the States). H&M is currently selling these modish Lightning McQueen tights from Disney's Cars movie online, and in-stores they have a few more to choose from. P now has Cars, dinosaurs and a very hip Star Wars with a sparkly lightsaber fighting Yoda. At only eight Euro each, you really can't go wrong to keep those little legs warm; under pants, under snowsuits, while walking around the upcoming Christmas Markets. I guess we'll keep wearing the tights for at least one more year...

Warm and fashionable! I bet he looks adorable in them.
Insisted on putting them on right away. He does look quite cute, the "95... lightning mcqueen" goes across the butt.
Your blog is lovely! And I have a little boy also:) Will look forward to your posts.!
these are awesome! =) I watch a 7yr old boy once a week and he wear different striped 'long underwear' pants, like from Hanna Andersson. When he comes home from school he kicks off his muddy school pants and runs around the house in his striped leggings. Always makes me think of Dr. Seuss! They really are practical!
Hysterical! I had this discussion with my brother-in-law five years ago, also an American ex-pat living in Germany who recoiled in horror when I gave his son, my nephew tights as a present to ward off the cold!
Or, like me, you can just pass on your little girls pink and lilac tights and sleepsuits to your baby boy just for the fun of disturbing the grandparents. He also looks like a little pink piglet in her old sleepsuit which my husband thinks is very cute. I'm not so sure about the shocking pink wintersuit he's inherited...I might think about replacing that...
